Description
Cultivating Hollow Crown Parsnips is a straightforward process, as these parsnips are known for their well-tapered, smooth, and white crowns. These plants are prolific, yielding parsnips that can grow up to 30 cm (12″) in length, featuring 5 cm (2″) crowns.
When these parsnips are in their young and tender stage, they can be enjoyed raw, offering a delightful taste. Furthermore, they excel in a variety of culinary applications, such as soups, stews, and vegetable dishes, adding their unique flavor to these preparations. It’s worth noting that exposure to frost enhances their sweet, delicate, nut-like flavor, making them even more appealing.
How To Grow
To achieve the best results with your parsnip crop, it is recommended to sow the seeds directly in well-tilled soil outdoors. To encourage quicker germination, you can prepare the seeds by soaking them in warm water for a period of 24 hours prior to planting. Scatter the seeds in rows, spacing them approximately 3-4 seeds every 3 inches.
Once the seedlings have developed three leaves, it’s important to carry out thinning, leaving one plant every 3 inches for optimal growth.
Here are the recommended planting specifications:
– Planting Depth: 1.3 cm (1/2″)
– Plant Spacing: 8 cm (3″)
– Row Spacing: 45 cm (18″)
